Eisner’s PS Roots

In World War II

Many of today’s Will Eisner fans have not had a chance to see and examine PS, a major element of his creative work during his evolutionary “middle period.” Even fewer are aware that the roots from which PS developed were planted in Eisner’s extreme makeover of Army Motors while he was in uniform during World War II.

Will Eisner and PS Magazine includes details about the development of Army Motors and art selections never before made available to the general public.

Eisner Set Sequential Art Pace

For Technical, Motivational

Communication Challenges

The magic of Eisenshpritz

Eisenshpritz (the term coined by Harvey Kurtzman to describe Will Eisner’s unique ability to make weather a key player and mood setter in an art sequence) was an ever-present factor in his realistic PS Magazine depictions of troops operating under field conditions.

When Will Eisner was ready to move on from his amazing success with The Spirit, he found PS Magazine to be a perfect real-life test lab to prove and polish his concepts of sequential art’s true potential. He demonstrated beyond all doubt that it was a powerfully effective means of conveying motivational and technical information, and to encompass true literary objectives.

His next challenging and rewarding period of innovation—opening the door for the world of graphic novels—showcased the tricks and techniques he honed to perfection during the PS years.

In addition to his legions of comics fans and graphic novel enthusiasts around the world, generations of America’s warriors regard him with fond respect and heartfelt gratitude.
